Job Recruiting Software

There are different levels of inefficiency in every company. It's impossible for everything to run at peak performance levels all the time, but there are some areas where you can make improvements to get things right more often than you get them wrong. Adding new job recruiting software to the arsenal of tools your human resource department has is one of those areas. Being able to keep better track of who is applying for which position and how many candidates you have for that job will help personnel managers make better choices when it comes time to hire someone.

Stress is a killer, for both individuals and companies. When you have inefficiency, you have stress, either on the level where the inefficiency is happening or several levels removed where the domino effect has employees and management constantly fighting an uphill battle. When human resources hires someone who can't handle the job they've been assigned to, it causes problems in areas where others depend on that job getting done. Nine times out of ten the wrong choice was made on the initial hire because the software used to track candidates was poor quality.

Shipping and receiving is a good example. There are a number of different positions in a warehouse and each is dependent upon the other to make a company efficient. Trucks arrive on a regular schedule and when they do there needs to be someone there to unload them. The load is placed on pallets and forklift operators bring it into the main warehouse where it needs to be sorted and either re-shipped or stocked on retail shelves out front. All-in-all, there are five different job positions available just to handle this one simple process. That can't be too difficult to hire for, right?

Want to see fireworks? Try putting a forklift operator into a role where he's stocking shelves or pasting price tags on canned goods. Not only does the position typically pay less, but he may not be qualified to do it. Driving a forklift doesn't require the same kind of raw physical power that picking up fifty pound boxes does. So how did he end up with this job? That's easy to explain. Someone in human resources, using a very limited job applicant tracking system, classified everyone as shipping and receiving. He got sent here because that keyword popped his resume in a search.

This may sound silly, but it happens, especially in this economy. The forklift driver, under normal circumstances, would turn the job down. Today he just might take it, struggle through it, and contribute to inefficiency in the warehouse. He'll eventually get stressed out and quit, and the rest of the staff will be affected by it, both during and after his tenure. Worse yet, the entire situation could have been avoided if the company had just invested in better job recruiting software. They didn't, and this isn't the only problem that has been caused by that. You should see the mess in the IT department.

How to Become Your Firm’s Star Employee

While sweating through the over two years and over 1000 hours of backbreaking slog to write the book Secrets of Entrepreneurial Success - Ten Steps to Running Your Own Business, I made a discovery.

I figured out what I thought was the bottom line of the bottom line of business. Not just small business, but all business.

It boiled down to this: Turnover minus Costs = Profit.

I'll say that again: Turnover minus Costs = Profit.

Turnover is what you sell. Costs are what you deduct from that. And profit is what you end up with (for the purists, Net Profit After Tax is the final reality of your business, and its profitability).

So when a small-business owner (or even big business owner) wades through all his or her daily tasks, it's easy for them to get distracted.

They need a mantra, something short and sharp that will guide them through the day, hewing them to the bottom line.

And that mantra is: Turnover minus Costs = Profit.

In other words: a business owner must constantly SELL more, and at the same time keep on cutting COSTS, to make sure that he or she has the most PROFIT at the end of the day. Or year.

Marketing? Advertising? The small business owner pumps money into those to maintain awareness of his company out there. So that he can SELL more.

Staff problems? May have to cut costs by retrenching.

Or take the time to find out what is bothering them, or pay for staff education, so they become more valuable staff. So that he can SELL more.

So you see that every decision a small-business owner makes is either concerned with SELLING more (Turnover), or cutting COSTS.

Those two things are on a boss' mind all day. Or should be, if he wants to be effective and profitable.

So how does that affect you, as the employee? What do the boss' problems have to do with you?

Well, if you want to become the most valuable staff member in your firm, then you should start thinking like the boss.

Ask yourself: how can I help my boss to sell more? And to cut costs?

You might be surprised as to how many situations you could find which would help your boss 1) sell more and 2) cut costs.

If you do this consistently, it will change your boss' attitude towards you. He will now see you (if he didn't see you before) as extremely valuable.

Why? Because you're helping put more money into his pocket (PROFIT).

And if he is worth his salt, he will reward you. If he doesn't, then move on and find someone who will reward you.

So this is how you become your firm's star employee.

Think like the boss. Help him find out how to sell more, and how to cut costs!

Don't tread on other staff member's toes, or imply that you're trying to tell the boss how to run his firm.

But if you do it right, your boss will be most impressed.

The other staff members will typically be trying to do the least amount of work possible.

But you're different - because you're now thinking like the boss.

Try it. It'll be fun - and the rewards will amaze you.

What Would You Keep in Your Steel Building?

While taking a peek inside Clarence Abadie's steel building will answer the question as to what he stores inside, that answer will undoubtedly leave you wanting to know more.
Like, for example, why does this 76-year-old man keep a fully functional, one-person helicopter inside of his steel building that sits in the backyard of his home in Tickfaw, LA?

The short answer is simple--building and flying helicopters are hobbies of his. The long answer is much more interesting and involves travel, intrigue, high flying adventures, duty to country, and loss.

As a young adult, the Marine Corps taught Abadie how to fly, and after his four years of service were finished in 1960, he knew he wanted to focus his career around flying. He was due to rotate back to the states before his discharge from his post in Okinawa, Japan, but he accepted an offer from the CIA to work for Air America, doing various covert operations during the next 15 years in places such as Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. After the company disbanded in 1975, Abadie came home to Louisiana and finished earning his college degree in professional aviation.

From there he worked for various companies during the next two decades and lived in Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Kwajalein Island, Abu Dhabi, and the Bahamas before returning to Louisiana where he retired in 1996.

"When it was time for me to retire, my wife and I were quite happy to come home to Louisiana and settle down here," says Abadie. "Our three sons were grown and out of the house, so we were ready for a slower pace of life."

When Abadie's wife of 30 years died in 2007 after battling thyroid cancer for six months, he realized that the best thing he could do was keep his mind and hands busy, so returning to flying was the natural choice for him.

"I bought a helicopter kit and built a rotary wing gyrocopter, but I soon found out that it was too difficult to fly it out of my yard," says Abadie. "I sold it and then built a Helicycle instead. I wanted to move it out of my garage, and that is when I bought my SteelMaster building. I wanted something durable and something easy to put up. SteelMaster was it."

For more than 29 years, SteelMaster Buildings, which is located in Virginia Beach, VA, has manufactured, designed, and supplied pre-fabricated arched steel structures to 40,000 customers located in every state of the United States, in 40 countries, and on seven continents around the world.

"SteelMaster Aircraft Hangars provide clear span buildings that are both economical and durable, making the steel structures world-renowned in the field of aviation," says Michelle Wickum, the company's director of marketing. "The unique design of SteelMaster's metal buildings allows spans up to 150 feet in width, with unlimited lengths. With no need for interior supports, people can maximize the use of the space in these steel Airplane Hangars. Whether you have a single, twin engine, or commercial jet, SteelMaster steel buildings can accommodate your needs."

Now that Abadie has his own helicopter and a proper building to store it in, where does he want to travel? "Out of all the places I have been, I'm more than content to just fly around here for fun," says Abadie. "I'm comfortable here--Louisiana is where I belong."
SteelMaster Buildings manufactures, designs, and supplies customers with pre-fabricated arched steel structures including garages, workshops, carports, agricultural storage, metal barns, Quonsets, airplane hangars, RV storage, roofing systems, storage buildings, military buildings, commercial warehousing, and industrial storage as well as a wide variety of custom building applications including homes, athletic facilities, retail stores, churches, bus stops, smoke shacks, doggie dorms, and correctional facilities.

Payroll Promptness Keeps Employees Happy

Payroll that is doled out promptly and done accurately can keep a staff happy. Keeping a stable crew of competent employees can be a challenging part of running a business, but is necessary for success. Once an employee has been trained, he or she is much more productive as well as content on the job. Learning a new array of duties can be stressful for both the new-hire and everyone he or she comes into contact with. There are many fine points and details which must be learned in order to smoothly maneuver the seas of the workplace. If staff members have regular contact with customers, it is even more important for them to be seasoned. Having a familiar face to work with will make customers feel more confident in a company's abilities. Here are some ideas for keeping a happy crew of competent workers:

- Payroll distribution: Having regular "pay dates" will allow workers to plan their budgets accordingly. If an office says it pays every other Friday, for example, it can be guaranteed that everyone has already planned on spending the majority of that money. Rent, utilities, a payment on the VISA card and even a date at the Saturday night movie might all depend on that trusty check being distributed as promised on Friday before closing time. If a boss wants to see an unhappy crowd who will soon be polishing up their resumes, he or she should try telling everyone that he or she didn't get around to writing their checks.

- Accurate timecard records: Some staff members may be on a set salary while the others are paid by the hour. For those paid hourly, accurate records of hours worked is crucial. Some timecards are hand written while others are punched on a time-clock. Many modern systems entail a computerized program for recording hours signed in and hours signed of out each day worked. Whatever the system, it's important that the individual be paid for each and every hour or fraction that was worked. If a person toiled away for 42 hours one week but due to a math error was only paid for 32, the employee is going to be one unhappy camper. If mathematics isn't the current boss's strong suit, it's in the company's best interest to hire an accounting service to handle this detail.

- Vacation and sick pay: When a company offers paid vacation or sick leave, this can really amp up morale around the office. Productivity is seen to be increased when people take vacation time off to recharge their own batteries. If a person is sick with the flu, better for them to take time off to recover rather than infect the whole office. When a person doesn't have to worry about financial losses from staying home to heal, he or she will be a more loyal employee. Keeping track of paid and unpaid time off can be complicated. A bookkeeping service can streamline this for a busy manager or business owner.

In order to keep a stable workforce, bosses need to pay attention to crucial details. Prompt payroll distribution, accurate accounting, vacation pay and sick leave will all make for a happier staff.
